CHARACTER INFO.

Character Name: Law, Vincent, also known as Ergo Proxy
Canon: Ergo Proxy, post-canon
Character Appearance: Link or embed an image of your character's appearance.
Character Age: Indeterminable. Assuming it was Proxy One who built Romdeau, assuming Romdeau counts years from the date of its founding, assuming Vincent isn't younger than he looks, the most I can narrow it down is anywhere between 300 and 20 years old. And none of those assumptions are safe bets. More to the point, Vincent himself can't know. Physically, he appears to be in his early 20s.
Pick A Number: 301 and 13

Canon Setting:

Ergo Proxy is a story about the end of the world. Really, truly the end of the world. Earth has already been a post-apocalyptic wasteland for over 5000 years, but now the domes are finally collapsing. The action follows Vincent Law escaping Romdeau Dome in search of his past, while those left behind witness the progressive ruin of their home, the last bastion of civilization. Vincent travels with Pino, a child robot with a soul, and later with Re-L Mayer, love of his life and HBIC extraordinaire, while the home front is held by Daedalus Yumeno, Chief of the Health and Welfare Bureau, Raul Creed, Chief of the Security Bureau, and a collection of Descartes-quoting robots built in the likenesses of the statues decorating Lorenzo de Medici's tomb. (These robots are referred to as the Collective. Sadly, they are not Borg.)

Earth is an environmental ruin almost beyond repair, scarcely inhabitable to humans. The sky is perpetually overcast, everything is grey and lifeless. And there are no true human inhabitants. Humanity took to the stars long ago, but before it did, it left behind 300 proxies, immortal, godlike beings tasked with safeguarding the Earth until their return. The proxies were to build domes and populate them with new humans, or robots (called AutoReivs). But these new humans were flawed. They were sterile, because the information that the proxies received from their Creators was incomplete. But that's not all.

The real cruelty of the Proxy Project is that the Creators built self-destruct mechanisms into their experiment. Proxy One, first and most powerful of the proxies, was given the title of Agent of Death and designed with an extra ability called the Pulse of the Awakening, also referred to as the Proxy Annihilation Program. In short, once this ability was unleashed, proxies would turn on each other, destroy one another the moment they came into contact. Proxies were the key to the survival of the new humans, so with the proxies gone, the people would follow, and all of their work would be annihilated. The answer seems simple, doesn't it? If every proxy stayed at home, they wouldn't have to destroy each other, right? Unfortunately, the Creators had thought of that too. Proxies are vulnerable to sunlight. When the environment was viable again, the clouds would part and they would all die anyway, thus leaving the Earth nice and uninhabited to make way for the return of the Creators.

Cheerful, is it not? It gets worse.

Life outside the domes is nearly impossible. Most new humans exposed to the polluted air don't survive. The ones that do can only live by scavenging from the waste of the domes. Life is nasty, brutish and short. (See Ergo Proxy, I can quote philosophers too!) Life inside the domes... well, each Dome was built and ruled by its own Proxy, and most were in various stages of ruin when Vincent came across them in the show, so I'll settle for describing Romdeau Dome.

Romdeau Dome was built by Proxy One, and was a busy futuristic metropolis governed by a man called the Regent. It seemed peaceful and prosperous, but was actually very tightly controlled. Most citizens owned at least one AutoReiv, which was connected to the global information network and could be used to track and observe its owner if necessary. It was not usually necessary, because, these people being sterile, every citizen was conceived in machines called WombSys, with which one could control and monitor every aspect of the process. Each citizen was created for a purpose; Daedalus and Raul were specifically engineered to hold the positions they hold. The only individuals who did not fit rigidly into this mold were the immigrants. A few years prior to the events of the series, Romdeau attacked Mosque Dome. (Ergo Proxy is frustratingly vague about time, see my fuzzy response to the question of just how old Vincent is, so I'm not sure how many years. Could be as many as 15, could be as few as 2, who the hell knows?) Vincent seemed to believe the destruction of Mosque Dome was an accident, so it appears the survivors didn't know it was Romdeau that was responsible, and they turned to Romdeau for help. Immigrants from Mosque were viewed as second-class citizens, and given dangerous or undesirable jobs and crappy housing in the worst parts of the city. An immigrant could apply for full citizenship, but the process was a long and difficult one. There did not seem to be much room for error.

Fellow citizens were expected to maintain tight control of their emotions at all times, even if they had just been attacked in their own home by a monster, or witnessed the sudden, violent death of their wife and infant son. (Yes, these things happened.) They were expected to obey the law without question. Public service announcements urged citizens to consume and make waste. Most people depended quite heavily on their AutoReiv entourage. This became a problem when the Cogito Virus began to spread and more and more AutoReivs turned homicidal. (The Cogito Virus was a computer virus designed to give sentience to AutoReivs, so that they could replace their masters if anything befell the new humans. The robots turned against humans because Cogito-infected AutoReivs know they'll be dismantled.) You'd see people signing their tables because they expected their entourage to give them papers to sign off on, like a printer running with no ink... but I'm getting ahead of myself. For the most part, although Romdeau's rulers like to throw around existential buzzwords, the people of Romdeau were kept in soporific ignorance. They knew little of the Creators, less of the world outside the domes, and nothing at all about the Proxies on whom they depended. Those few who were privy to the truth often became bitter and jaded in peculiar ways. It is for this reason that no Chief of Security, who by virtue of his duties may sometimes come across those terrible secrets, has ever lasted very long. Those who misbehaved or became enlightened soon found that they no longer had a place, and every one of the main characters in this story sooner or later becomes enlightened. Or misbehaves. One is usually a consequence of the other.

One last thing: every proxy has mind powers. They are able to send dreams to anyone with a soul, or create waking illusions, or go into a person's mind and make them believe they're a kumquat. (Not that anyone ever does that last one, but it would be within the realm of possibility.) This wouldn't be that big a cause for concern, except that Ergo Proxy delights in mind-screw episodes, and as the main character and an amnesiac confused about his own identity, Vincent is a prime target for some seriously surreal shit. As a result, it's sometimes difficult to determine what actually happened and what was just in someone's head. You'll notice I use a lot of maybes and apparentlys and I apologize for that. I'm doing the best I can to interpret things in a way that makes sense when what I have to deal with is an anime that threw the characters into a gameshow with no warning and no explanation, where characters go off on tangents about the meaning of the word 'bios' that have no evident bearing on the plot while in another episode an android dreams about cartoon dogs. Thankfully I don't have to cover the dogs because that wasn't Vincent's dream for once, but you see my point.

Character History:

Once upon a time, Proxy One grew bitter about the cruel and ultimately pointless duty he was tasked with. His lover, Proxy Monad, who ruled the faraway dome of Mosque, tried to comfort him, and he found some solace in her, but eventually he could bear it no longer and sought to escape his fate. So he created a clone of himself, Ergo Proxy. He gave his entire life to Ergo, from the care of Romdeau dome to his title of Agent of Death to his very memories, and even his relationship with Monad. And then he disappeared, leaving his poor clone holding the entire bag in his hapless claws. Monad's reaction to this switcheroo is never explored, but she loved Ergo too, and apparently didn't tell him he wasn't the original. Unfortunately, after an unspecified period of time, Ergo fell into the same despair as his progenitor, and went to Mosque to see Monad and ask her help in erasing his own memories in his own attempt to escape.

In retrospect Proxy One should have seen this coming. Ergo Proxy was created to be essentially identical to him; what made him think that Ergo would be any more equipped to deal with the tragedy of the Proxies' existence than he was? In fact, Ergo was less so. It wasn't enough for him merely to give his duty to someone else, he could no longer bear the mere knowledge of the Creator's sins. At any rate, it was Ergo Proxy's abdication that set in motion most of the events of the anime. In retaliation for 'stealing Ergo away', Romdeau, led by its Regent Donov Mayer, destroyed Mosque and captured Monad. Some time after that, Re-L Mayer was born. Though she was raised as the Regent's granddaughter, she was in fact created in the image of Monad as bait to lure Ergo home. This both worked exactly as expected, and was pointless.

Upon losing his memory, Ergo Proxy became Vincent Law. After the 'disaster' in Mosque, this seemingly human nobody made the journey to Romdeau among all the other survivors of Mosque, and was registered as an immigrant along with the rest. No one had any idea that he was anything other than an ordinary man, and despite having precious few memories to draw upon, Vincent never doubted it himself. Thus Ergo Proxy returned home without anyone realizing, rendering the purpose of Re-L's creation irrelevant. But it worked pathetically, embarrassingly well. Vincent would first cross paths with Re-L while he was looking for work in the temporary immigrant section. Despite not remembering a blessed thing about Monad or anything else of his former life, never suspecting that she was meant to provoke this reaction in him, he fell completely in love with her at first sight.

During the next few years Vincent worked hard at becoming a fellow citizen; suppressing his emotions, keeping his head down. Always obeying the law, never asking questions. He got a job in an AutoReiv Disposal Unit, destroying Cogito-infected AutoReivs. He tried to be the person he thought they expected a fellow citizen to be. We get a peek at his profile in an early episode: it says his case would come up for review in 998 days and in the first episode Dorothy (Vincent's AutoReiv entourage) says that his hearing is going to be soon, so Vincent spent at least two years trying to become a fellow citizen. It may have been longer; we're never given a good picture of the usual process for becoming a fellow citizen. Possibly promotions are involved, but Vincent would never get one. Not that he wouldn't have earned one, but because the system was designed to reject him, or because he wasn't truly the docile, unthinking sheep they expected him to be.

In the first episode, the Pulse of the Awakening was activated within Proxy One. It was a literal awakening for Monad Proxy, who was mutilated almost beyond recognition at the behest of Donov Mayer, and kept dormant with sedatives in Daedalus Yumeno's care. She effortlessly broke from her restraints and escaped. For Vincent, the effects would be less obvious. He was out chasing an infected AutoReiv that night when his vehicle caught the Cogito virus and nearly killed him. It's this incident that leads him to cross pathes with Re-L once again. Re-L was looking into Cogito-infected AutoReivs as well, specifically, a series of murders believed to have been committed by AutoReivs, and asked for information about the previous night's events.

After that, he was sent after another infected AutoReiv, and the course of his pursuit took him near Re-L's appartment that evening. There Vincent's memory had a hole. When Ergo erased his memory and created the Vincent Law persona, he ended up giving himself a split personality. Vincent couldn't know he was a Proxy, so whenever he switched from human form to proxy form, he also stopped being Vincent Law, and resumed being Ergo Proxy. Not that Ergo at this point knew his own name, or that he was a proxy, or even what a proxy was. He was mostly a bundle of proxy instincts and subconscious desires, in other words, the inhuman parts of Vincent that he could not afford to acknowledge. So when Vincent blacked out that night, Ergo Proxy took over. He had seen Re-L, and she looked familiar to him, though he couldn't remember why... so he fell through the roof of her apartment. The two stared at each other but Ergo did nothing but run a thumb on her lips. It was at this moment that Monad Proxy decided to crash the party. The Pulse of the Awakening was in effect, so even though she used to be his lover, she was nevertheless compelled to kill him, although I imagine that even if this was not the case, she'd still be pretty angry to catch her man macking on a younger clone of herself. In any case, both proxies jumped out of Re-L's appartment, and that was the last Re-L saw of them that night.

The next morning, Vincent Law was found unconscious a short distance away from her apartment, and Monad was nowhere in the area. But she wasn't done with him. She caught up with him in a shopping center, and chased him through the crowd, killing everyone who got in her way. As he passed by an escalator, a woman and her infant son died at Monad's hands. Out of the corner of his eye, Vincent spotted the woman's child-type AutoReiv, Pino, falling to her knees and praying, as AutoReivs do when they are first infected with the Cogito Virus. Monad cornered Vincent in the lower districts of Romdeau and it was at this point that Ergo Proxy killed her. Vincent later woke up on the metro with blood on his hands and no memory of turning into Ergo and killing Monad.

Now, both Re-L and Raul Creed, Romdeau's newly minted Security Chief, were investigating proxies, Re-L because being having her apartment trashed and her face touched by a monster raised questions she wanted answered, and Raul because it was his job, and because that woman and her baby were his wife and son. Because Raul had seen Vincent pass by his family and indirectly cause their deaths, and because Re-L had found something that belonged to Vincent in her apartment, they both set their sights on capturing, or at least interrogating him. Vincent got a call from Dorothy, and when he returned to the AutoReiv Disposal offices, he found that she had been destroyed, and nearly got killed by Romdeau security forces. Raul was especially upset, and had framed him for the destruction of his Entourage as a pretext for his arrest.

Panicked, Vincent packed a few essentials and managed to evade capture long enough to make his way to the service tunnels. There he ran into Pino, who was herself on the run from an AutoReiv Disposal squad. Pino led him down a path that, it appeared, only infected AutoReivs knew about, specifically, to an airlock that led outside the Dome. Meanwhile, Re-L had been trying to reach Vincent's cell phone, but he had been busy dodging security guys. She eventually reached him, and he begged for her help. Re-L promised him she would do everything in her power to help him, and managed to figure out where he was. But she only beat the Security Bureau by a few minutes. Before they could effect an arrest, Pino opened the airlock, and the force of the wind sucked her, Re-L, and Vincent outside. Re-L was saved by her Entourage, Iggy, but Vincent could only hang onto the railing. As he looked down into the abyss, he reflected that the last couple of days had demonstrated just how huge a failure he was. He had tried so hard to become a fellow citizen, got nowhere, and though he hadn't done anything wrong, Romdeau repayed him by treating him like a criminal. His despair was such that he deliberately let go and fell to the surface. Pino followed him.

Vincent thought that would be the end of him, but a proxy doesn't die from a mere fall. Nor did he die of the illness he suffered from breathing the poisonous air of the world outside Romdeau for the first time, although it did keep him bedridden and feverish for ten days. He was taken in by a man called Hoody, the de facto leader of a commune composed of exiles from Romdeau, most of whom were old men and women. Vince and Pino stayed in the commune for a while during which he recovered and tried to figure out what to do next, but fate wouldn't let him rest for long. An automated scout vehicle from Romdeau spied Pino while on its regular patrol. It would have killed her if Vincent hadn't shot it down first. Before it crashed to the ground, it managed to broadcast its last few seconds of video footage to its masters at the Security Bureau. Thus the people of Romdeau learned of the fugitive immigrant's survival, and of the existence of the commune.

Re-L enlisted Daedalus' help to retrieve Vincent. As it was forbidden for anyone to leave the dome, she had to do this illegally. Raul meanwhile had ordered an attack on the commune. It was while Re-L was arguing with Hoody about Vincent's return that the attack began. She tried to drag Vincent away, but he refused to leave when the members of the commune were endangered. The attacking patrol crafts damaged Re-L's hazmat suit in the ensuing confrontation. The only way she could move was by discarding the suit, but once exposed to the outside air, she succumbed to illness and she did not have the advantage of a Proxy's immune system. She would have to be returned to Romdeau in order to survive. While Hoody used her ship to ferry her back to Romdeau, Vincent, Pino, and the surviving refugees escaped the commune on Hoody's airship, the 400 Rabbits, or Centzon Totochtin, depending on who you ask. (Vincent calls it the Centzon, Pino calls it the Rabbit.)

Now Vincent throughout all this had mostly taken a WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME, I AM SO PERSECUTED attitude. But what with the black-outs he'd been having whenever he turned into Ergo Proxy, and the strange dreams of stars shooting into the sky, he was clueing in to the fact that not all was quite right with him. And after both Re-L and the Security Bureau had tracked him to the commune, he figured he had better find out just who he was soon, before he endangered anyone else. Having nowhere to go and no better destination in mind, Vincent and his companions set a course for Mosque, the place he believed to be his homeland, and, perhaps, the place where he would find some answers to his questions. It bears repeating that all of his human companions were old and frail, so none of them were able to survive past the next episode. Naturally, seeing everyone around him dropping like flies got Vincent all depressed and he spent the next episode whining about how alone he was and indulging in grimdark narration while Re-L and Daedalus and Raul furthered the plot back in Romdeau. Even if he wasn't alone at all. What was Pino, chopped liver?

They sailed in the darkness for so long Vincent had run out of food, when Pino spotted a beam of light in the distance. They sailed toward it and ran smack in the middle of a raging battle between a group of human soldiers and a platoon of AutoReivs. The soldiers picked them up and took them to their base in the ruins of Karos dome, where they fed Vincent and offered to repair the 400 Rabbits, which had gotten damaged in the attack. They also expected Vincent to offer his assistance with their war against the AutoReivs from Asura. Vincent realized how much more agreeable Pino was in comparison to these men who were drafting him into a pointless conflict and immediately regretted his AutoReiv-dismissing ways. He was all for grabbing Pino and getting the hell out of there as soon as his ship was repaired, but as Karos was a dome, it contained a proxy, whom the Pulse of the Awakening had roused from a centuries-long sleep. She killed a couple of soldiers. Their leaders, having not witnessed the deaths of their men, and not believing the legends about a monster who sleeps underground, blamed Vincent and locked him and Pino up. The cell next to them contained a madwoman who rambled cryptically about [rewatch that episode] in a cell next to one of those pertinent madwomen, the type that spout nothing but the most cryptic and foreshadowy nonsense. As she babbled, Vincent began to feel anxious and frightened; he was feeling the Pulse of the Awakening as the other proxy drew nearer. After slaughtering most of the soldiers, the other proxy finally made her move on Vincent, but he turned into Ergo Proxy and fought back. He killed her easily, and then fell unconscious.

Then a fancy-looking man brought Vincent, Pino, and the 400 Rabbits as well, to Asura Dome. Vincent was quite surprised to wake up in opulent surroundings and be wined and dined by a man who seemed completely unconcerned about the war that had been raging between the men from Karos and the AutoReivs from Asura, despite claiming to be Asura's master. The man's name was Kazkis, and he would turn out to be a proxy. The proxy Vincent had killed in the last episode was called Senex, and she and Kazkis were lovers. But Kazkis, initially, didn't seem particularly upset at his lover's death. He practically declared his love for Vincent... but when he realized that Vincent didn't remember killing Senex or even who he used to be, that was when Kazkis became frantic. He didn't blame Ergo Proxy for carrying out his duty as the Agent of Death and acting as the Pulse of the Awakening dictated, but Vincent Law, the coward who had run away not only from his duty but also from his memories and his very self deserved no forgiveness. He chased Vincent halfway across the dome, badgering him about being a Proxy and running away from his duty while the hapless wanderer denied the truth in vain. Eventually Vincent had to stop running and fight back and this was the first time he was aware when he once again involuntarily switched to Proxy form. The process looked painful and traumatic, and this fight was much more evenly matched. But Ergo did kill Kazkis at last, and as he was dying, Kazkis asked Ergo one last time: "What are you the agent of?" And Ergo finally remembered his name: Ergo Proxy, the agent of Death. After Kazkis was dead, and Vincent and Pino were sailing away from Asura, she told him she knew all along that there were 'two of him'. And that she wasn't afraid, because Vincent was the one who always protected her.

You'd think Vincent wouldn't have to learn his lesson more than once, but you'd be wrong. In the next episode featuring him, Vincent stumbled across a bookstore in the middle of nowhere, he was looking for Pino and for the 400 Rabbits, and he decided to stop to ask for directions. The bookstore owner sat him down and made him tea, and encouraged him to take a look at one of the books, which had Vincent's name on the cover. At this point, the clerk snapped his fingers and addressed the audience directly to explain to us that we were in "the theatre of Vincent's mind". Then someone who looked just like Ergo Proxy/Proxy One went on about perspective and Descartes and the Pulse of the Awakening and took Vincent back through his own recent memories, the ones with relevance to his existence as a proxy. This was probably Proxy One, sick of his wayward progeny swimming headlong up denial, deciding to use his mind powers to hurry Vincent's epiphany along. "WHO WAS VINCENT LAW, WHAT WAS HE AFRAID OF? WHAT DROVE HIM TO ERASE HIS OWN MEMORY?" (This episode is hells of pretentious and meta it's kind of embarrassing.) Whereas the incident with Kazkis had confronted Vincent with incontrovertible proof of his being a proxy, this episode was dedicated to Vincent's actually coming to terms with the fact that he was a proxy. And then Re-L found him laying on the ground crying because of this revelation. At first he thought this was a dream too, but as it turned out, Re-L actually was there. She insisted on him telling her everything he knew about Proxies, but since he had only just realized he was one himself, he didn't have much else to tell her.

Now, Re-L had brought with her a gun loaded with special bullets called FP shells, given to her by Daedalus, which were made to kill Proxies. She snuck up on Vincent while he slept and contemplated shooting him - she was having a hard time believing that Vincent was a Proxy, and since the shells were harmless to humans... Ultimately she wasn't reckless enough to go through with it. Instead she sat down beside him and started talking about how she had followed him all this way and how she felt 'strangely drawn' to him, so he got the wrong idea. He pulled her down with him, which knocked the gun out of her hand. He was busy awkwardly confessing his love to her, and hadn't noticed it yet. Re-L decided the best way to keep him distracted was to kiss him, while using her foot to kick the gun out of sight. After the kiss they just sort of stared at one another. It was incredibly awkward and they never spoke of it again.

Later on, they ran into a Proxy and an infected AutoReiv. Vincent went Ergo and while they were locked in combat, Re-L took her opportunity to shoot the other Proxy. She told Vincent that one day she would kill him too, and could he still love her knowing that? Spoiler: Yes. He's that much of a schmuck. Re-L decided she was going to travel with Vincent and Pino, and ordered Iggy to take the Proxy's body back to Romdeau with him. Little did she know that Iggy had been infected with the Cogito Virus ages ago and decided to kill Vincent and kidnap her instead, since he figured she'd be safer in Romdeau than with a monster. To this end he swiped her gun and succeeded in imprisoning her, but the dead Proxy's AutoReiv tried to kill her. In the end he sacrificed himself for his selfish mistress's sake. Vincent, who had taken the gun back from Iggy when he tried to kill him, gave it back to Re-L to show her that he trusted her, and trusted her to kill him if it ever became necessary.

After burying Iggy, they made a stop in Ophelia dome to gather supplies. It was completely deserted, though they found a supermarket that was still completely stocked. The reason it was deserted was that all of its inhabitants had been killed by a shapeshifting proxy. It tried to kill Vincent and Re-L and Pino, and turn them against eachother, and pretend to be Vincent and convince him he was suicidal, not necessarily in that order. Pino and Re-L caught on first, and Vincent managed to defeat it by realizing that he did want to live after all. In the next episode, don't ask me how, they got sucked into this gameshow run by a Proxy called MCQ. Most of the questions had to do with the Proxy Project; this was also the first time Proxy One was directly referred to in the show. Vincent won the game, and MCQ seemed thrilled to die. I'm inclined to think this episode actually happened because the show was broadcast to Romdeau and Daedalus and Raul both saw it.

Then they were becalmed for a few days and Vincent and Pino took it easy while Re-L went stir-crazy, and when the wind picked up they arrived at a cave system populated by Morlocks who were allergic to fresh air. On their way out the spotted a missile flying in the direction of Mosque, and when they got there, Mosque was pretty much annihilated. Vincent found an old room with a broken AutoReiv that was supposed to be the guardian of his memory; but something had clearly been there not long before and trashed the place so that Vincent would not be able to learn anything there. That, though they didn't know it, was Proxy One, who took care to leave a clue that Vincent would find what he was looking for back in Romdeau. So after all that, they finally turned around and set a course back to Romdeau.

On the way back, they came near a dome called Smile Land as Pino was recharging her batteries (which was her equivalent of sleeping). Smile Land's proxy sent her a dream to warn her and her companions away from his home, since he knew the end was coming, but didn't want to fight Ergo. He wanted his citizen's deaths to be peaceful. Pino succeeded in convincing Vincent to navigate away from Smile Land and they went on their way.

As they neared Romdeau dome, Vincent's mind was once again attacked by a proxy. This one tried to convince him that he was a fragment of Re-L's imagination, conjured by her guilt at betraying him. The scenario she presented was one where, on their return to Romdeau, Re-L allowed Vincent to be recaptured. She posed as Re-L's therapist, Swan, and told Vincent that for Re-L's own good, he would have to be removed from her consciousness. First she asked Vincent to imagine his ideal life (which was so embarrassingly banal, but more on that in the personality section), then she told him that because of him, Re-L had lost sight of the difference between fantasy and reality, and the only way to remove himself now was to kill her within the fantasy world. Even in fantasy, however, Vincent could not bring himself to kill her. He eventually caught on and snapped out of the entire dream, though the proxy behind this particularly nasty bit of mindfuckery was never confronted in reality.

When they finally returned to Romdeau, it was falling apart. The Cogito virus had become a veritable plague, and without AutoReivs, the citizens were completely helpless. Vincent disappeared almost as soon as he and Re-L entered the Dome. In the next few days, there were sightings of Ergo Proxy all over the city, but never of Vincent. Ergo had regained his memories and the shock, as predicted, had submerged the Vincent Law persona. Ergo went to see where Monad's corpse was being kept, and wept. Although he acknowledged that he was the one who killed her, he could not forgive Donov Meyer for the horrors Monad had been subjected to while in captivity. While he was paying his respects to her, he was interrupted by a girl who acted like she knew him, wasn't at all afraid of him, and claimed to be Re-L Meyer.

See, in the real Re-L's absence, Daedalus went a little nuts and force-grew another clone of Monad, which he treated as a replacement Re-L. It's unknown precisely why it happened to her and not Re-L, but this new clone became Monad reincarnated. When Ergo expressed his confusion as to why some other girl was claiming to be Re-L, the clone got flustered and ran away. But Ergo hadn't seen the last of her.

Ergo's next move was to visit the Regent. While the Regent's Entourages criticised him for leaving and informed him that the Regent hated him for abandoning Romdeau, Ergo Proxy advanced, unconcerned. He killed Donov Meyer right before Re-L's eyes. Meanwhile, Raul Creed was lying in wait in the shadows. While Re-L confronted Ergo, he shot the Proxy in the arm with an FP shell, but Ergo survived by ripping off his own arm, and then promptly growing it back. Horrified, Raul emptied his gun, trying to score another hit, but Ergo wasn't going to let himself get shot a second time. Raul escaped to find some more ammunition, and Ergo left soon after. He wandered Romdeau, taking in its imminent destruction, the total collapse of its civilization. Meanwhile, Re-L was asking her grandfather's Entourages for information on Ergo Proxy and Romdeau.

Ergo Proxy returned to the Regent's sitting room and Re-L pointed her gun at him. She figured he had to know that if he came back she would hold him at gunpoint. He told her that was precisely the point. Ergo Proxy wanted to die. But Re-L, ever difficult, refused to kill him. Instead she told him she'd figured out who the real mastermind of this whole story was: Proxy One. At this point, Proxy One's laughter echoed throughout the chamber. They followed the sound of his voice.

Ergo went into shock upon seeing his progenitor: he really had had no idea that he wasn't the original. Proxy One was only too happy to monologue about the purpose of the Proxies and the malice implanted by the creators and also to accuse Ergo of running away, an irony which was not lost on either of them. He goaded Ergo Proxy into fighting to the death, and Ergo ripped a hole into his progenitor's chest. As he was dying, he entrusted the burden of shaping the world to his shadow, and that was when Monad II showed up. Now fully grown into her Proxy powers, she pleaded with Ergo not to listen to Proxy One. He didn't have to take up the burden of life again, she said. He was tempted to take her up on her offer. There was just one catch: it entailed flying through the clouds and into the sunlight. Suicide, for a Proxy.

Vincent recalled that Re-L had asked him to find her, when she left him and his original to their confrontation, and he wasn't ready to die just yet anymore. So he apologized to Monad, left her to fly into the sun on her own, and went back down to pay his respects to Proxy One, who with his dying breath, told him he could think of no fitter punishment for the Creators than Vincent's survival.

Character Personality:

>On Vincent's Memories:

I guess the first thing I should clear up is this. At the point in canon where I am taking Vincent, he has recovered his memories. The series doesn't get much time to explore what this means for him, so some of my portrayal of him might be a little different from what we see in canon.

Vincent now remembers both his life as Ergo Proxy, and the memories Proxy One implanted in him. But some of these memories may be hazy, as if belonging to someone else. Which in a sense is true: Vincent is quite different from both his former self and his progenitor. There's also no clear demarcation between Ergo Proxy and Proxy One's memories (otherwise Ergo would eventually have figured out that he wasn't the original). This is also the reason Vincent doesn't know his own age. How can he remember when he was created if he can't tell the difference between his own memories and Proxy One's? The only memories he can be sure are his own are those of his final descent into despair, and those he created after he lost his memory. Not that Vincent remembers much of those final days where he was mired in depression and desperation. It's not something he'd want to remember, and anyway, he was half-crazed at that point.

So what's the point, if his memory is still treacherous? What's changed is that Vincent now has enough answers to decide who he is and what he cares about. He knows he's a clone of Proxy One. He knows what his purpose was in the Proxy Project, he knows he loved Monad and was forced to kill her by the Pulse of the Awakening.

"I am myself. I no longer care who I was before I became who I am."

His past doesn't matter. He is Vincent Law, who is kind to little robot girls and forgets to put the toilet seat down and hits his thumb with a hammer because he's daydreaming when he shouldn't be, who is desperately in love with a girl who thinks he's an idiot. And he is also Ergo Proxy, Agent of Death, shadow and successor of Proxy One, last of the proxies, final consequence of the crimes committed by the Creators, who can stand in the sunlight and survive its punishing rays. But in order to decide who he is, he had to know who he used to be.

>On Vincent's Development

"This is the face of an ideal Fellow Citizen. A dull face."

This was our first real introduction to Vincent. He was being chastised for a blunder he made the night before, and Re-L is telling us that he is plain, unremarkable. Dumb. Obedient. The impression that Vincent was very careful to give off during his days in Romdeau. He slouched and sat with his shoulders hunched. He hung his head. He spoke softly, and squinted his eyes, and plastered his misbehaving hair to his head in an unflattering style. He cultivated this impression of dullness and unremarkableness. He desperately wanted to become a Fellow Citizen, so he was willing to "constantly suppress himself, all the time, everywhere." He also may have had another reason for behaving this way. From hints dropped by more than one proxy, it seems that proxies in general had been burned pretty badly by humans in the past, and not just by the creators. This may have been something that lingered subconsciously even after Vincent's memory loss and informed his behaviour. Whatever the reason, his Mr. Cellophane act got him nowhere. The mask was too different from who he really was, even if at that point he had no inkling of his true identity.

The strain of this gave him a rather bad case of low self-confidence. This identity of Vincent Law was all he had, and everything in his life was telling him Vincent Law wasn't good enough. Even after he realized that becoming a Fellow Citizen was a lost cause for him and that Romdeau was kind of a shitty place anyway, even when he was exiled, he didn't change that much. Though he was free to be himself, though he did stand taller, and apologized less, though the animators even started to draw him less derpy and more handsome, he was still humble and soft-spoken and easy-going.

He'll always be a little awkward. Reclusiveness and solitude are intrinsic to a proxy's being, and for Vincent that translates to shyness and introvertedness. And absent-minded clumsiness. He'll get distracted by his own thoughts and fall down a pile of rubble, or he'll not be paying attention to his surroundings and Re-L will kick him off the ship. (Can't blame her, Vincent is pretty kickable.) He's easy-going, so he lets these things happen because they don't matter, and his pride has already taken a lot of beating. And because his most fervent desire, all along, has been love and acceptance. When the Swan Proxy told him to imagine his ideal life, the life he imagined was one in which he was engaged to Re-L, where he was Chief of Security in Romdeau, where everyone loved and admired him. I cringe in secondhand embarrassment whenever I watch it.

This sounds so cheesy, so banal, and so very human. But despite his lofty nature as a proxy, this is all he ever craved. That's why he was so focused on becoming a Fellow Citizen. He wanted to be human, he wanted to be normal, he wanted to belong. It's why he was so terrified of regaining his memory and becoming a 'monster'.

"If I can't be me anymore, I'd rather it end. You understand? I'll need you to shoot me."

This is why it took him so long to accept that he was a proxy. He would deny it vehemently each time it was hinted at, and when confronted with actual evidence he would try his best to repress it. His encounter with Kazkis Proxy was fairly traumatic for him. But Pino's acceptance was crucial for him. After this and Anamnesis, the episode where Proxy One goes into his mind and forced him to accept that he was in fact a proxy, Vincent seemed calmer and more at peace with himself. The other shoe had dropped, and Pino was still with him. Pino had known all along and still she was his friend. He had finally accepted that he didn't belong with everyone, but that all he needed was the love and support of his friends. Pino and Re-L were with him because of who he was, and not who he pretended to be.

> On who Vincent is right now

So Vincent doesn't have to be a doormat, and he isn't. For the things that matter, Vincent will stand firm. He showed bravery and quick thinking in saving Pino's life from the automated patrol. He stood up to Re-L when she tried to take him back to Romdeau at the expense of the people of the commune, who were about to be killed. He has a backbone and a strong sense of right and wrong. Because of his experiences of being Vincent Law, he's got a much more human perspective on morality than most proxies. Proxy morality seems pretty skewed in general, which is par for the course when you consider the futility of their purpose. Proxies were created with the task of creating a new race of humans, but not given the information to make those humans viable, and then tasked with DESTROYING those humans and themselves when the Creators returned. A lot of proxies justified their fulfilling of that purpose as 'well, we're all gonna die anyway, so who cares?' And no one was a more bitter nihilist than Proxy One, who engineered the destruction of Romdeau in a fashion more brutal than entirely necessary, simply out of spite for the imperfect creatures he had created. Vincent knows that life is tough, often dark and full of suffering, but he believes it's also worth living. If Ergo Proxy once hated his creations, this is no longer the case.

"The living have no choice but to go on living," he says. He would never kill anyone, human or proxy, if they didn't truly deserve it, unless it was to protect himself or those he cares about. Killing humans simply because they're flawed, destroying the dome simply because it was destined to be destroyed, these things didn't sit well with him. It's not so much a question of love as of justice, for the Proxies as well as the humans, and he intends to see that the Creators answer for their actions. This is his new purpose.

He's not sure how yet. He trusts he'll know what to do when the time comes. Vincent sees the big picture, and tends to be vague on details. Re-L at one point accuses him of making up his journey as he goes along, and that's certainly true. He just set out in the direction of Mosque and played it by ear. When they were becalmed, he figured they would just sit tight and wait for the wind to come back. When Re-L got on his case, he started yelling at the wind to come back. He probably didn't really expect it to do so, but he figured it was worth a shot. (See, Re-L, he is doing something about the wind!) So he's kind of dorky, but in a sweet way. He listens to his heart. It never occurred to him to question why he was in love with Re-L. He had no way of knowing that the initial reason he was drawn to Re-L was because she was made to look like Monad, but he's clever enough to have worked it out by now. But he doesn't care. He loves Re-L (and it's Re-L he loves, not a shadow of Monad, whom he had no memories of until revently) because he loves her, and that's all there is to it.

Which isn't to say he's not smart or doesn't use his head. He's the guy who figured out that all the infected AutoReivs employed similar escape routes. In the final episodes one of the guys in AutoReiv Disposal even said that he predicted the explosion of Cogito Virus infections long before they happened. A hard worker when he needs to be, he's very thoughtful and conscientious. Sometimes too thoughtful, to the point of moodiness. He tends toward self-deprecating humour, though he's not immune to silliness. (This side of himself he mostly shows around Pino.)

>On being Ergo Proxy

Now that Vincent has recovered his memories, there is no more need for the Vincent and Ergo personas to be seperate, so they have nearly completely merged. Since Ergo was mostly the collection of proxy instincts and subconscious sorrow that he wanted to hard to repress, all this means is that Vincent's mask of human meekness may slip a little more often. Proxy instincts are stronger when Vincent is in proxy form, and his form governs his thought to a certain degree. He'll certainly be more fierce and wild and 'godlike' as Ergo Proxy then he is as Vincent Law. There's no significant separation in thought, understand, just a slight difference in behaviour and presentation. Kazkis Proxy had a habit of staying in human form unless he needed to fight, now that Vincent has control over his transformations, that he would adopt a similar modus operandi. If only because Proxies are giants, there won't be much room on the rovers, and Vincent bangs his head on the ship's ceiling often enough without adding about three feet to his height.

Character Powers:

Proxies are canonically referred to as gods, but gods in the sense of the greek pantheon. They are corporeal, they can be killed, however with difficulty, and they are not omnipotent. They are, however, vastly more powerful than a regular human being. The full extent of their abilities are never outlined, and they seem to vary from proxy to proxy, but they have demonstrated several abilities that seem consistent across all Proxies. It's implied that Proxy One, as the first and last of the Proxies, is the most powerful of all, and as his shadow, Ergo Proxy shares in that distinction.

> Physical: Proxies are way stronger than human beings. Things thrown by a Proxy have been known to make dents in solid stone upon impact. They're also much faster than human beings, so much so that they sometimes move faster than the eye can see.

> Mind games: Proxies seem to have the ability to create visual and auditory illusions, as well as the ability to create visions and dreams within another person's mind, such as when Proxy One projected himself into Vincent's mind, or when the Swan Proxy managed to convince Vincent he was just a fragment of Re-L's mind, or again when the Proxy, Will B. Goode, showed Pino a dream to warn her away from his Dome. It's shown they can do this from quite a distance, since they had barely come into sight of the dome when Pino awoke from her dream. I don't expect Vincent to be fond of using this power after all the times he's been on the recieving end of it, though.

> Force field: Ergo Proxy has shown himself capable of releasing waves of energy powerful enough to knock combat AutoReivs aside.

> Teleportation: The journey from Romdeau to Mosque took Vincent and his companions months to complete by windship. Proxy One used this power to beat the his shadow to the punch and was gone before anyone was the wiser.

> Human Form: Proxies can take on a human appearance. Pretty straightforward.

> Proxy Awareness: When they come to within a certain distance of one another, perhaps the span of a Dome, or a city, Proxies can sense each other's presences.

> Immortality: The source of a Proxy's immortality is the fact that they are made from Amrita cells, which have an impenetrable membrane and can reproduce indefinitely. They don't age, they don't get fatally sick, they can't be killed by normal means. They can regrow limbs and recover from injuries that would kill a regular human being. There are only three ways to harm them: sunlight, FP shells, and another Proxy. An injury inflicted by a Proxy neutralizes the Amrita cells, and the wound will have to heal normally. FP shells that hit a vital area will kill in a matter of seconds, though if it hits a limb, like when Raul shot Vincent, the proxy can save itself by ripping off the offending limb. The limb will grow back in a matter of seconds, and now you have a pissed off proxy to deal with. For some reason, Vincent appears to be more resistant to sunlight than most Proxies. I assume it would still weaken him, but it didn't appear to be killing him to be standing in the sunlight at the end of the final episode.

As for skills:

> Mechanics: Vincent seems to be pretty good at fixing machines. He was part of the AutoReiv Disposal unit, which was mostly about destroying robots, but he was also trained to provide maintenance to them, and he fixed up the 400 Rabbits, which apparently no one else in the Commune could do.

> Marksmanship: As a member of AutoReiv disposal, Vincent was often called upon to apprehend Cogito-infected AutoReivs who escaped. To this end, he was issued a gun in order to shoot down his targets. He appears to be competent at it, though he's a much more effective fighter in Proxy form.

proxysproxy: (unremarkable unimpressive me)
I lost my job last month, before that whole 'Missionworth' debacle.

Seems my boss didn't mind 3-week long unexplained absences. It was the explanations that drove him nuts. The weird things that happen to newcomers on a regular basis. "I switched bodies with a guy who can't fix cars. I turned into a snowman." [His tone is wry and self-deprecating.] We all have our limitations, I guess.

Even at its worst, though, this city gives us choices. They may not be very attractive options, but they're there.

proxysproxy: (Default)
Body and Appearance

1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy? Kinda short for a guy. 5'9" Average in just about everything: musculature, height, weight. In human form he is mostly unremarkable and unremarked. In proxy form, however... Lean. Probably on the wiry side, and about average height for a Proxy. Note that this means he's still something like 9 feet tall.

2. How old is he? No clue. Assuming it was Proxy One who made Romdeau, assuming Romdeau counts years from the date of its founding, no more than 300 years old, and assuming Vincent isn't younger than he looks, no less than 20 years old. Note that these three assumptions are tenuous at best. We don't even know when Ergo originally left Romdeau, or how long it took him and Monad to get rid of all his memories. More to the point, Vincent himself isn't entirely sure. There's no real break between Proxy One's memories and Ergo Proxy's. The only memories he knows for sure are his own are Vincent Law's. Physically, he appears to be in his early 20s.

3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch? Vincent tends to slouch and sit with his shoulders hunched, at least in the early episodes; he's trying to make himself smaller, ordinary, unnoticed. As his confidence improves over the course of the series, so does his posture. Ergo Proxy slouches, but that's mostly because human buildings aren't meant to accomodate anyone the size of a Proxy, and he's always looking down at people. Because they're shorter than him.

4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities? The point is kind of moot seeing as he's a Proxy; that is, ageless, immortal, nigh-unkillable. He probably doesn't technically need to eat or sleep like human beings would (though he still gets sick when he leaves Romdeau, still gets indigestion when he eats too much, still gets the sniffles when he's forced to swim out to get the Rabbit back... Go figure.) But when he lived in Romdeau he had a physically demanding job, and, well, he outran Monad without using his Proxy powers for a pretty long time. So yeah, I'd say he's pretty fit.

5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid? Clumsy. But it's more because he's absent-minded than any physical deficiency. He's the kind of guy who's too busy thinking about things to watch where he's going, so he'll step on some piece of unstable footing or accidentally bang his thumb with a hammer, or he'll bump his head because he's panicking.

6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
It's hard to give a fair estimate for an anime character, given how generically pretty most of them are drawn, regardless of whether they're supposed to be canonically pretty.
No one ever really comments on his looks, one way or the other; so I'd venture on the good-looking side of average; not OMG so pretty, but not bad-looking, either. He's the kind of guy who looks unremarkable generally, but who cleans up nicely. Except for his eyes. He probably doesn't think much about his appearance. He shaves, he showers, he makes an effort to look presentable, but he doesn't really take pride in it, it's just something you do.

7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred? White and nerdy. He probably doesn't have to worry about skin problems on account of being a Proxy. Speaking of which, as Ergo Proxy he has pitch black skin.

8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style. Dark brown; never quite behaves, though he does his damnedest to plaster it to his head in the first few episodes in a style that I maintain reminds me of a young, non-balding Hari Seldon. He either thinks this is swanky, or it's the regulation haircut for immigrants or something. He stops 'styling' it halfway through the series, which is a mercy.
In Proxy form, his hair tends to stick up, and actually seems to be a lighter, more reddish shade of brown.

9. What color are his eyes? Bright green. They're nigh electric green in certain scenes. In Proxy form they're white and pupil-less.

10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features? Like I mentionned before, Vincent's eyes are his most striking feature. He keeps them closed when he's doing his Mr. Cellophane act. They're intense. And very bright; and anyone who takes a good look at them KNOWS there's more to Vincent Law than the stupid hair or the clumsiness.

11. What are his chief tension centers? Probably his shoulders and neck, given previously outlined slouching habits.

12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit? FFFFUUUUU CLOTHES IN ERGO PROXY. In canon, Vincent has precisely one outfit. No, I'm not counting the Swan episode, where he was dressed in Raul's clothes holyshit that is so embarrassing. This outfit is a hideous jumpsuit parka whatever thing that is off-red and looks, quite frankly, stupid. He wears this all series so I must assume he literally has nothing else, or else never had the opportunity to pack it while he was fleeing for his life.

In Siren's Port, I imagine Vincent mostly wears dress-casual clothes when he's not in his work jumpsuit. That is, unless Re-L was the one who took him clothes shopping when he first got there.

13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
Canonically his clothes, such as they are, fit him well; you never see him struggling to squeeze into pants or floating in his coat, and he seems comfortable enough to wear them day in, day out, though again, he doesn't have much choice.

I don't think he'd see any point in wearing clothes too tight or too loose, and it's not as though he's grown or changed shape since he arrived in SP. And if he chose them himself I don't see him not being comfortable in them. Although when it comes down to it, Vincent in general has a hard time being comfortable in his skin.

14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
Well, Vincent is a mechanic in an auto-repair garage, so his work clothes is a grease-stained jumpsuit. With a nametag. He probably asked his boss if he had to wear it all the time and got a funny look, but was overall relieved when told that no, he didn't have to wear the jumpsuit all the time.

15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers

Speech

1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Deep voice, fairly smooth. INCREDILY DEEP, RUMBLY, AND SEXY IN PROXY MODE.

2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He tends to whine in the earlier episodes, and he's unsure of himself, so he sometimes hesitates. He doesn't often raise his voice, unless he's really in a state.

3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He tends not to use contractions, especially when he's being serious. This is even more exxagerated when he's being Ergo Proxy.

4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He's fluent in English, I assume, since that's the language spoken in Romdeau. I would not be surprised if most Romdeau citizens also spoke French, given how much the Collective verbally fellate Descartes, but this is just speculation on my part. I don't know if he knows any other languages.

5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nope. Except when using the phrase 'raison d'etre', but that's an English appropriation so it's not technically switching languages.

6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
Like I said, he's unsure of himself, so mostly he thinks about what he's saying. Even then, it doesn't mean that he doesn't put his foot in his mouth. He has a hard time speaking up for himself.

7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
In the normal course of things, Vincent is normally articulate. He can get very poetic on occasion, see him describing Monad in the final episode: "She offered her love to flawed, broken souls, and in that we found freedom."

Mental and Emotional

1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Much smarter than he appears. People tend to assume he's stupid or incompetent, but he's actually rather smart, and given how hax Proxies are, is probably much smarter than your average human. Smart enough to understand how to restore a completely devastated Earth to habitable conditions, and that couldn't have been an easy thing to do, hax Proxy powers or no.

I'm hesitant to use the term book-smart, however, since Vincent-as-Vincent doesn't seem particularly scholarly. And his social skills leave something to be desired, so I can't say he's street-smart either.

2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Depends on the situation. He's not really an impulsive kind of person but if his friends are in danger? He will rise to the occasion.

3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Vincent listens to his heart. He's very much an idealist; how much more idealistic do you get than opposing the Creators on principle? Earth at the end of the anime is still a nearly dead world; the new humans created by the Proxies have been almost wiped out, and those remaining haven't stopped being sterile. There's no future for Earth save the Creators. But the Creators abandonned the Earth and set to their Proxies an ultimately pointless and cruel task. They don't deserve the newly restored Earth.

4. What kind of education has the character had?
No fucking clue. This would double as a question as to what kind of education Proxy One had, since Proxy One implanted his memories in Ergo Proxy to make Ergo Proxy think HE was the Agent of Death and the creator of Romdeau.

Proxy One seems fairly well versed in philosophy and seems to know a lot about what's going on in the world, but he's had forever to accumulate that knowledge. It's unlikely that Proxies had formal educations, but 5000 years is enough time to read a heck of a lot of books.

5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Well, Vincent seems to be pretty good at fixing machines. He was part of the AutoReiv Disposal unit, which was mostly about destroying robots, but he was also apparently trained to provide maintenance to them, and he fixed up the 400 Rabbits, which apparently no one else in the Commune could do.

He'd probably like to learn more about how humans tick. Humans in Romdeau and back home were created barren because the Proxies weren't provided with the necessary information to create complete humans. Vincent has gathered things are different in Siren's Port and would like to know just what it was he/Proxy One was missing.

6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Introvert. He's really focused in on himself during the series, because the series is about finding out WHO he is, but even now that he knows, now that he's determined his identity for himself, I can't really see him suddenly become a much more social creature than he was to begin with.

7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Vincent is generally serious, and thoughtful. Contemplative. He hardly ever gets angry; you get the feeling he thinks most things aren't worth getting worked up about, particularly if they pertain to him. He doesn't stand up for himself much. He can be a hard worker, as he was in Romdeau, but once he leaves it, and once he becomes comfortable, we see he's naturally fairly laid-back and patient. He does get moody sometimes (see; his anxiousness about his true identity, how he would rather die if he couldn't still be himself), but he's the kind of guy who can appreciate the journey rather than focus on the destination.

8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Vincent is pretty shy when meeting new people, and fairly quiet in new situations. From hints dropped by more than one Proxy, it seems that Proxies in general have been burned pretty badly by humans in the past (and not just by the Creators). This may have been something that lingered subconsciously even after Vincent's memory loss and informed his behaviour. Like I've mentionned, he (perhaps unconsciously) cultivates an impression of dullness and unremarkableness and meekness, passively trying to go unnoticed.

9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React, mostly.

10. Which is his default: fight or flight? Flight. When he hit his point of deepest despair, he didn't just run away from Romdeau and his responsibilities, he ran away from his very own self. Rather than face Monad, he ran away. Rather than rebel against Romdeau, he escaped.

11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Vincent can be playful, though he shows this side of himself more often to Pino than anyone else. In his darker moments, he indulges in self-deprecating humour.

12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
I don't know if amnesia and multiple personality disorder count anymore, since they've mostly been resolved by the end of the series. Vincent recovers his memories, and the personas of Vincent Law and Ergo Proxy are mostly integrated at this point. Key word: mostly. Ergo Proxy's memories from before he shed them and became Vincent Law are just the slightest bit vague. (because the show likes to be mysterious about Proxies and I don't want to make up ridiculous headcanon) Ergo Proxy is a shadow of Proxy One. Vincent Law is his own person. However, Proxy instincts are stronger when Vincent is in Proxy form, and his form governs his thought to a certain degree. He's certainly more fierce and wild and 'godlike' as Ergo Proxy then he is as Vincent Law. There's no significant separation in thought, understand, just a slight difference in behaviour and presentation.

While Vincent still had amnesia, in the beginning he dealt with it by not even being aware he had amnesia; after he figured it out, he went searching for his memories. As for the whole 'secretly being Ergo Proxy' thing, he outright denied and repressed it for a long while until Proxy One got sick of it and forced him via mind-screw episode to face it. After which, the two personas began to merge.

13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?

-The first moment happened long before he was alive, actually. It's a memory, or maybe a dream of Proxy One staring up as hundreds of Creator ships take to the skies. "I'm sad. But I'm also... laughing." His first memory is his abandonment by the Creators, and the ironic realization of the ultimate futility of the Proxies' purpose.
-Next I suppose would be the moment when the despair caused by that futility became too much to bear, when he went to Mosque and asked Monad to take away his memories.
-Not sure if I should mention his first meeting with Re-L Mayer next because he did fall for her like a ton of bricks.
-Then the Pulse of the Awakening, so most of the first episode, specifically, the part where Monad chases him , the part where he crashes through Re-L's skylight and touches her face and then flips away. Meeting Pino probably also counts in this confusing mishmash.
-Jumping from Romdeau, and giving up on the notion that he could ever have become a Fellow Citizen.
-The flight from the commune.
-Karos; when he first begins to suspect there might be something more wrong with him than just 'ANGST WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAPPEN TO ME I AM SO PERSECUTED'
-The confrontation with Kazkis Proxy; for the first time, Vincent is conscious during his transformation into Ergo Proxy. This is kind of traumatising for him.
-Small thing, but important: after Kazkis's death, when Vincent returns to Pino, she tells him that she knew he was a Proxy all along, and didn't care, because "Vincent is the one who always protects me." Even though he was (in his own opinion) a monster, Pino was still his friend, Pino accepted him unconditionally.
-Anamnesis: with the help of a mindscrew courtesy of Proxy One, Vincent finally admits to himself that he is a Proxy, even though he still has no idea what that means.
-Re-L joins the party; this is mostly important because it is shortly after this that the whole "RE-L IS THE ONLY PERSON ALLOWED TO KILL ME" thing is established.
-Arrival in Mosque; discovery that the answers lie in Romdeau after all
-Return to Romdeau; Ergo Proxy's memories return, and his persona overwhelms Vincent Law's. Mourning Monad's death. Trying to get Re-L to kill him
-Re-L refuses to kill him, Proxy One's involvement revealed. As Romdeau falls, Vincent kills Proxy One, and takes on a new purpose: to oppose the Creators.
Most of these happened in the span of six months.

14. What does he fear?
At this point, only losing those he cares about.

15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
Well, he wants to show those mean Creators what for. Show them just what 5000 years of resentment, despair, and frustration looks like. He also thinks it'll be neat to see some concrete change in the Earth's condition, now that the clouds have parted.

16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
I don't know.

Relationships

1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
Vincent literally has no parents. He was cloned from Proxy One, who I guess for the sake of argument we could call his 'father'. Some father, though.

Ergo was created because Proxy One, in the depths of despair, wanted to escape his burden and his duty as a Proxy. So he created a clone of himself to take over. Which he then implanted with most of his memories except for the ones of his despair. Ergo didn't even KNOW he wasn't the original. He was dumped into this job that caused his predecessor to become a depressed, nihilistic monster, even though he was created to be identical to Proxy One and thus it's folly to expect him to turn out any different. Proxy One essentially did the same thing to Ergo Proxy that the Creators did to Proxy One. World's. Worst. Dad.

Vincent only met Proxy One once in canon. It was kind of mind-bending to him to find out he wasn't the original. And then they fought to the death. Vincent didn't like his progenitor or want his approval; he disagreed with his nihilism and the spite he directed towards his human creations. But also he doesn't like the Pulse of the Awakening one bit; it forced him to kill Monad, and others of his kind.

This is why he didn't really want to kill Proxy One. So he took some comfort in the fact that at least in Siren's Port, he wasn't the only Proxy left. Aside from one conversation in Siren's Port, Vince and P1 barely interacted after he arrived. They didn't really need to. Having once been indistinguishable from Proxy One, Vincent understood him better than anyone else. And P1, overall, pretty much took a 'well done, son' attitude towards his shadow. Then P1 'went home'. Which was kind of sad for Vincent, but not especially upsetting.

2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
Nope

3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Nope

4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
Not so much family as 'nakama', but Pino. He doesn't consider her to be his daughter like Raul does (that would be kind of weird) but he definitely acts like her responsible older brother a lot.

To a lesser extent, in Siren's Pull, the former residents of Romdeau, and those they care about. Daedalus and Raul may not like him very much, and by and large he figures they can look out for themselves. But they're still under his protection.

5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Pino again. They met in the service tunnels when he was being chased by the Security Bureau and she was being chased by an AutoReiv disposal squad. Pino spotted Vincent and started following him and asking existential questions. And she never stopped.

6. Does he have other close friends?
Re-L Mayer.

7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
Nope. Vincent is a gold medallist in the Awkward Olympics; it's not that he's not a nice guy. He just has difficulty approaching people, and he's shy.

8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
Friends; Vincent doesn't really have a family so the question is moot.

9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Ergo Proxy was romantically involved in Monad for some time, but they were never married. The Pulse of the Awakening forced him to kill her, as he does in the second episode. This is kind of a strange case since his earlier memories of Monad were almost certainly given to him by Proxy One. So Ergo never 'fell' in love. By virtue of Proxy One's memories, he already loved Monad when he was created.

10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
Nope. Well, he does love Re-L a whole bunch, and they are living together in Siren's Port, but they're not dating or anything.

11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest? As Vincent, always and only Re-L.

12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
Re-L. But seriously, I don't think Vincent has given it much thought. It was love at first sight for him when he met Re-L, and he doesn't question his feelings on the subject. Re-L was actually cloned from Monad specifically to evoke this reaction in him, and while he didn't know it at the time, he's figured it out now, and he doesn't care. This is how he feels.

It is, however, worth noting that he trusted Re-L with the task of killing him when the time came, and when it came, and Vincent/Ergo expected her to kill him, she didn't, and helped him find a new reason for living. If he didn't love her before, he definitely would now, just for that.

All he really wishes for where love is concerned is for Re-L, and it'd sure be nice if she would love him back.

13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
I'm not even sure Proxies are capable of reproducing in the normal way. As far as the series is concerned, Vincent is the only Proxy who wasn't one of the original 300 Proxies, and he was cloned, not born.

The thought of having children probably hasn't even occurred to him given the fact that Romdeau citizens are infertile, given where he currently stands with Re-L (ie: not in a relationship with her), and given the general lack of a future for life on Earth, especially if he succeeds in driving the Creators away from Earth.

But if the thought ever did occurr, and those issues could be resolved, I think Vincent would love to have kids, and he'd probably be a great parent, judging from his behaviour with Pino.

14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
The Creators :| Also Donov Mayer, who authorized the torture and experimentation on Monad.
And, unbeknownst to him, Daedalus Yumeno and Raul Creed hated his guts.

15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Preeeeetty damn straight. Vincent never expresses any interest in anyone besides Re-L or Monad and when Kazkis came on to him he freaked out like nobody's business.

16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
I don't think Vincent is particularly preoccupied with sex. He may even be kinda repressed. I base this on the fact that he crushes on Re-L like a 14-year-old girl, at least at first. You know, all "I wish Sempai would notice me!!1!"

17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
Ahahahahahah. If Vincent's sexual fantasies are anything like his non-sexual fantasies, Vincent is paaaaaaainfully vanilla. He likes flowers and long walks on the beach. No but seriously, one of Vincent's greatest wishes is to be loved and accepted and all that schmoopy stuff. He wants the cuddles and the sweet nothings, although, given how enamored he is with Re-L, he'll settle for tsundere insults and token but meaningful physical contact.

Beliefs

1. Do you know your character's astrological (zodiac of choice) sign? How well does he fit type?
He's on the cusp of Sagittarius and Capricorn, according to the 'birthday' I headcanoned for him. I chose it based on minimal research of zodiac signs, and I chose the cusp because both signs have aspects that fit him to a T and others which don't fit him at all. Sagittarius because Vincent's canon is all about his journey of self-discovery; Capricorn because when it comes down to it, despite being a big bad Proxy, Vincent is really kind of banal.

2. Is this character religious, spiritual, both, or neither? How important are these elements in his life?
It's hard to be religious when you remember being worshipped as a god. But Proxies as a whole seem to be rather spiritual. I think it comes of representing various aspects of the world.

3. Does this character have a personal code of morals or ethics? If so, how did that begin? What would it take to compromise it?
Proxy morality seems pretty skewed in general, which is par for the course when you consider the futility of their purpose. Proxies were created with the task of creating a new race of humans, but not given the information to make those humans viable, and then tasked with DESTROYING those humans and themselves when the Creators returned. A lot of Proxies justify their fulfilling of that purpose as 'well, we're all gonna die anyway, so who cares?'

Vincent is different. He won't kill anyone, human or Proxy, if he can possibly avoid it. He'll do it to protect himself or those he cares about. Of course he did declare war on the Creators, but that's different. What the Creators did to the Proxies and to Earth wasn't fair and now they waltz back onto Earth like they own the place, after everything they've done? Not on his watch.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
He'll keep an open mind, but it would depend on the belief. He understands that people have a need to believe in something, and he understands that sometimes there is no such thing as a good choice, but if someone were to use their beliefs to justify hatred or destructive actions, he's not so understanding.

5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?
I can't really think of any prejudices that he might have.

Daily Life

1. What is the character's financial situation? Is he rich, poor, comfortable, in debt? In Romdeau he was dirt poor. In Siren's Pull he earns more than minimum wage, but he's not exactly rich. If he weren't living with Re-L, I'd say he was on the poor end of comfortable.

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
Well, in canon, at the beginning, Vincent was a second-class citizen. Well, probably more like 3rd class. Immigrants could supposedly earn citizenship in Romdeau. Vincent worked really hard at earning citizenship but part of his character development was realizing that 1) it was a lost cause for him, and 2) it wasn't worth it; Romdeau is kind of a shitty place when it comes down to it. Also it helped that he was pretty much chased out and then spent the rest of the series looking for his lost memories. Once he became an exile, he actually began to stand taller, and was less afraid of being himself, whoever he was.

In Siren's Pull, he's kind of gone back to being a 2nd class citizen, but things were different. In Romdeau, he didn't have any friends, and he was kind of shooting for acceptance in society at any cost. Now he knows there are people who accept him for who he is and they matter far more than the rest of the world.

3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others? In canon, in Romdeau, he lived alone in a crappy two-room apartment where he probably spent as little time as possible... because he spent most of it working, and the apartment was just a place to eat and sleep. When he left, home became the 400 Rabbits, which he spent a lot of time either maintaining or flying. It's in as good condition as a vehicle scrounged from a post-apocalyptic junkyard can be expected to be in. He shares it with Re-L and Pino, and, post-canon, Kristeva, although we never really get to see her interact with him.

In SP, Vincent lives with Re-L in her quite nice apartment.

4. Besides the basic necessities, what does he spend his money on?
He doesn't spend much on himself, because he's not used to having disposable income and he's really not at all focused on what he 'wants'. He buys little things for Pino and Re-L usually.

5. What does he do for a living? Is he good at it? Does he enjoy it, or would he rather be doing something else?
I don't believe Vincent had much of a choice in working in AutoReiv disposal in canon; he says he saw Re-L for the first time while he was looking for a job with the other immigrants and the flashback has him in this gigantic queue, so I imagine when it was finally his turn the official was like: "What is your name? What is your ID number? Okay you're in AutoReiv Disposal. NEXT." In his first speaking lines he's getting reprimanded for messing up on the job, but I don't think he was particularly bad at it. That was the night the Pulse of the Awakening began, so he was most likely just off his game because of that. I don't think he particularly liked or disliked his job; but he wanted to be a Fellow Citizen and fellow citizens didn't work in AutoReiv Disposal.

In SP, he's working as a mechanic at a garage, and though the job isn't glamourous and the boss is kind of a hardass, he does a good job and he can take pride in his work.

6. What are his interests or hobbies? How does he spend his free time?
Spending time with Re-L or Pino, mostly.

7. What are his eating habits? Does he skip meals, eat out, drink alcohol, avoid certain foods? Vincent is boring and isn't fussy and he doesn't really drink alcohol. He won't refuse it if he's offered it, but he won't go for it of his own initiative. He does a lot of cooking in SP, because suddenly he can afford food that isn't crap, and he has enough time to not be rushing. He makes a conscious effort to cook healthy and non-fatty foods, in deference to Re-L.

Associations

Which of the following do you associate with the character, or which is his favorite:

1. Color? Green is the colour I associate with him; blue is probably his favorite
2. Smell? machine grease and fresh air
3. Time of day? midnight, though he likes dawn best
4. Season? Autumn or spring are both his favorite and what suits him most
5. Book? None that I can think of at the moment.
6. Music? "I don't want to set the world on fire", "I'm all alone" - Spamalot, "L'oiseau" - Michel Fugain,
7. Place? Ruins; wasteland
8. Substance? Can't think of any
9. Plant? Asters or lillies.
10. Animal? Dog. I've compared him to a puppy enough times.

OLD BAG BAGGED BY HEAD OF NPP, RAUL CREED

(Name of old lady,) the mastermind behind the mysterious body-switching incidents that have occurred all through last month, affecting Newcomers and natives alike, has finally been caught. The (age)-year-old (profession) appeared to her captor Raul Creed, himself a victim of one of her pranks, the day her spell wore off.

Confusion spread throughout the city when the incidents started. Interviews with several victims revealed that the body-switching would always occur the day after they had quarreled with someone. Just how (name) accomplished it is still unclear, but when asked why she did it, she had this to say: (insert quote here)

Raul Creed was quoted saying, in a prepared statement outside of the police station, that “I realize that the victims of this woman’s powers may be out for blood, but, as head of the Newcomer Political Party, I know that the city will serve swift justice on (insert name here). And, thankfully, with our help, this woman has damaged another life for the last time.”

Although her antics have inconvenienced many people, the court anticipates a light sentence in view of her advanced age.

So, Proxies are kind of godmode. They are ridiculously powerful for no clear reason other than because the Creators thought WHY NOT. And some of those powers might cause you inconvenience. So I'm writing this permissions post.

MIND GAMES: This is the big one: Proxies have the ability to create visual and auditory illusions, as well as the ability to create visions and dreams within another person's mind. This has manifested in such ways as Proxy One projecting himself into Vincent's mind to lecture him about perspective and force him to come to terms with the fact that he is a Proxy, or the Swan Proxy showing Vincent a dream to convince him he was just a fragment of Re-L's mind, or Proxy One again making Raul Creed hallucinate that Vincent was taunting him.

I don't expect Vincent to be fond of using this power after all the times he's been on the recieving end of it. He most likely won't use it at all unless it's to beneficial effect, but I figured I should put it down anyway because this is something that he can do.

HERE'S HOW YOUR CHARACTER CAN KILL VINCENT: The source of a Proxy's immortality is the fact that they are made from Amrita cells, which have an impenetrable membrane and can reproduce indefinitely. They don't age, they can regrow limbs and recover from injuries that would kill a regular human being, they are functionally immortal, they are resistant to all kinds of damage. There are only three ways to harm them:

- shoot them with FP shells, available in limited quantities for use against the Darkness. (Thanks a lot, Daedalus.) A direct hit to a vital area will kill him in a matter of seconds. But if you DON'T get him in a vital area, and you hit a limb instead, he'll just rip it off, regrow it, and now you have his undivided attention and will likely be in very deep shit.
- get another Proxy to attack them. An injury inflicted by a Proxy neutralizes the Amrita cells, and the wound will have to heal normally. Good luck convincing Re-L or Proxy One to try, though.
- weaponize sunlight. Note that for some reason, Vincent appears to be more resistant to sunlight than most Proxies. It still weakens his powers, but he won't burn up the way Proxy One might.

To make a long story short, Vincent will recover from any wound not caused by one of those three things pretty fast. That said, he's not totally immune to damage; stuff can still temporarily hurt him, especially if he's in human form.

So here are the questions:

[OOC]

1) Backtagging: Yes.
2) Threadhopping: Yes.
3) Fourthwalling: I'd be surprised if your character knew Ergo Proxy, but no. Vincent has enough existential issues without that on top of it.
4) Offensive subjects (elaborate): Yes.

[IC]

1) Hugging this character: Sure
2) Kissing this character: Unless you're Re-L, he wouldn't be comfortable with it.
3) Flirting with this character: It'd probably go over his head, but go ahead.
4) Fighting with this character: She's not a
5) Injuring this character (include limits and severity): You'd have to work pretty hard to injure him. If you did manage to find a way, I'd rather he not be permanently crippled, but otherwise I'm fine.
6) Killing this character: Discuss it with me first.
7) Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Discuss it with me first

So, uh. I only got into this canon like a month ago, and Vincent Law is a very new character for me.

This is the post where you can tell me if I'm doing it wrong, and give me suggestions on how to do it right.

Have at me.
proxysproxy: (Default)
The things Vincent did for Pino. He sighed as he walked down the street, holding a hand-painted coffee mug in one hand and the little AutoReiv's hand in the other. They were on their way to the place where Proxy One spent his days, and all because Vincent couldn't bear to say no to the girl who had been his closest companion for months.

All he had agreed to do, at first, was help Pino with a Father's Day gift. She wanted to paint a coffee mug, and Vincent was happy to help. But then she insisted that he should make one too, and his protests that he didn't actually have a 'papa' (not as she understood the word) fell on deaf ears. His eyes had fallen on the second mug, on which was inscribed the phrase 'No 1 Dad', and, not wanting to disappoint his young friend, he muttered, "Well, I guess I could give it to Proxy One." The irony of doing so and the unintentional pun on his progenitor's name had struck him as funny at the time. For Pino's benefit, he made a thoroughly ridiculously production of decorating the mug, and had a lot of fun.

But he didn't really intend to go through with it. He had no idea how Proxy One would react. Would he be angry? What would he think of Vincent? He wasn't exactly a happy families sort of person. It wasn't as though they even had that sort of relationship. After all, the first time they had met, they had fought to the death. And you could make a good case for Proxy One being the worst 'father' ever: not only abandoning his 'son', but saddling him with the very same task that brought Proxy One himself to such despair. Vincent didn't crave his original's approval, but he did want to keep his respect. There were only two other Proxies in all of Siren's Port, and it would be hard enough going if both of them thought he was an idiot. (It was probably too late to change Re-L's opinion of him, but she had a big advantage over Proxy One in that she was the one Vincent was in love with.)

Again, however, Pino had insisted. So Vincent had decided they would come during the day, when Proxy One couldn't come out, and mail the mug to him. He knew this would only delay the embarrassment. He knew that this could probably be interpreted as a cowardly gesture. But he really, really would rather not do this. And he couldn't say no to Pino.

This clunky laptop-looking thing is also a phone and will have video capabilities.

Abilities

Character's Canon Abilities: Proxies are canonically referred to as gods, but gods in the sense of the greek pantheon.

> Mind games: Proxies seem to have the ability to create visual and auditory illusions, as well as the ability to create visions and dreams within another person's mind, such as when Proxy One projected himself into Vincent's mind, or when the Swan Proxy tried to convince Vincent he was just a fragment of Re-L's mind, or again when the Proxy, Will B. Goode, showed Pino a dream to warn her away from his Dome. It's implied they can do this from quite a distance, since they had barely come into sight of the dome when Pino awoke from her dream. I don't expect Vincent to be fond of using this power after all the times he's been on the recieving end of it.

> Force field: Ergo Proxy has shown himself capable of releasing waves of energy powerful enough to knock combat AutoReivs aside.

> Teleportation: The journey from Romdeau to Mosque took Vincent and his companions months to complete by windship. Proxy One somehow beat the his shadow to the punch and was gone before anyone was the wiser.

> Human Form: Proxies can take on a human appearance. Pretty straightforward.

> Proxy Awareness: When they come to within a certain distance of one another, perhaps the span of a Dome, or a city, Proxies can sense each other's presences.

> Creation: This is probably the vaguest power, and Vincent will not be using it much, if at all. No Proxy has ever been SHOWN to use it during the series, but it's a fact that each of them somehow created a dome and the first members of its population. Since they're man-made, I doubt they're able to create matter, but perhaps they were able to shape and transform it into something else. And since the Domes rely on their Proxies for survival, it's also possible that Proxies generated energy for the Domes.

> Immortality: The source of a Proxy's immortality is the fact that they are made from Amrita cells, which have an impenetrable membrane and can reproduce indefinitely. They don't age, they don't get sick (well, they do, but the illness won't kill them), they can't be killed by normal means. They can regrow limbs and recover from injuries that would kill a regular human being. There are only three ways to harm them: sunlight, FP shells, and another Proxy. An injury inflicted by a Proxy neutralizes the Amrita cells, and the wound will have to heal normally. For some reason, Vincent appears to be more resistant to sunlight than most Proxies. I assume it would still weaken him, but it didn't appear to be killing him to be standing in the sunlight at the end of the final episode.

Weapons: Vince has a gun, if for some reason he can't kick ass in Proxy form.

History/Personality/Plans/etc.

Character History: Vincent's story starts with Proxy One and the Proxy Project. 5000 years before the start of the story, the Earth was a complete mess. An environmental ruin almost beyond repair, no longer inhabitable to humans. So humanity took to the stars, but before it did, it left behind 300 Proxies tasked with restoring the Earth and recreating the human race, and building Domes in which these new humans were to live, one to each Proxy. But the information the fugitive humans that the Proxies would come to refer to as the Creators left for their creations was faulty. The human race they recreated was flawed, incomplete. Sterile. Not only that, but this project they were tasked with was a back-up plan, set in motion in case the Creators weren't able to return to Earth. And in case the new humans didn't work out, the Proxies were also instructed to use a computer virus called the Cogito Virus to grant sentience to the AutoReivs, that they might take the place of their human masters. Don't ask me how that was supposed to work. I suppose in a way it was forward-thinking of the Creators to want to leave a legacy on Earth even if they themselves couldn't come back but, well, they're jackasses.

See, if they did come back, they built self-destruct mechanisms into their experiment. Proxy One was given the title of Agent of Death and designed with an extra ability called the Pulse of the Awakening, also referred to as the Proxy Anihilation Program. In short, once this ability was unleashed, Proxies would turn on eachother, destroy eachother the moment they came into contact. With the Proxies gone, the Domes would follow, and all of their work would be annihilated. And if each Proxy wisely decided to stay home and not seek eachother out, well. Proxies are vulnerable to sunlight. When the environment was viable again, the clouds would part and they would all die anyway.

As you can imagine, over the millenia Proxy One became quite bitter about the cruel and ultimately pointless duty he was tasked with. He found some sort of solace in his love for Monad Proxy, but eventually he could bear it no longer and sought to escape his fate, which he did by creating a clone of himself, Ergo Proxy. He dumped the care of Romdeau dome and even his title of Agent of Death into Ergo Proxy's hapless claws, and where he absconded, I am not sure. Unfortunately, after an unspecified period of time, Ergo fell into the same despair as his progenitor, and went to Mosque Dome with Monad, where he erased his own memory in his own attempt to escape.

In retrospect Proxy One should have seen this coming. Ergo Proxy was fundamentally identical to him; what made him think that Ergo would be any more equip to deal with the tragedy of the Proxies' existence than he was? It's like when Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes made himself a clone to do his homework while he went out to go play, and when he returned, he found that his clone had had the same idea, and so on and so forth until there were at least 5 Calvin clones, none of them any more willing to do homework than the original. Luckily for Proxy One, Ergo either didn't want to inflict his duty on yet another hapless clone, or he figured his progenitor could pick up the slack.

At any rate, it was Ergo Proxy's abdication that set in motion most of the events of the anime. In retaliation for 'stealing Ergo away', Romdeau, led by its Regent Donov Mayer, destroyed Mosque and captured Monad. Some time after that, Re-L Mayer was born, created in the image of Monad as bait to lure Ergo home.

Upon losing his memory, Ergo Proxy became Vincent Law. Vincent recalled the attack on Mosque, but he referred to the attack as a disaster, and I'm not certain any of the Mosque immigrants knew that Romdeau was in fact responsible for the destruction of their home. At any rate, that 'disaster' and the journey to Romdeau Dome are Vincent's first memories. And one day when he was looking for work in the temporary immigrant section, he first saw Re-L. And, without knowing that she was meant to provoke this reaction in him (because he had, after all, lost his memories), he fell for her like a ton of bricks.

Vincent worked hard at becoming a fellow citizen; suppressing his emotions, keeping his head down. Always obeying the law, never asking questions. He got a job in an AutoReiv Disposal Unit, destroying Cogito-infected AutoReivs. He tried to be the person he thought they expected a fellow citizen to be. It's never made clear, but he might have spent over two years working towards that, and getting rejected every time his file came up for review.

Then the Pulse of the Awakening was activated within Proxy One. It awakened Monad, and though mutilated almost beyond recognition by torture at the behest of Donov Mayer, she still managed to escape. Thus begins the first episode of Ergo Proxy. The same night, Vincent was out chasing an infected AutoReiv when his vehicle caught the Cogito virus and nearly killed him.

There Vincent's memory has a hole. See, when Ergo erased his memory and created the Vincent Law persona, he sort of ended up giving himself a split personality. Vincent couldn't know he was a Proxy, so whenever he switched from human form to Proxy form, he also stopped being Vincent Law, and resumed being Ergo Proxy. Not that Ergo at this point knew his own name, or that he was a Proxy, or even what a Proxy was. His memory was just as kaput as Vincent's. But there were advantages to being a ten-foot tall demon-looking thing, not the least of which was, apparently, the ability and effrontery to break into Re-L's house and creep on her while she was in the bathroom. It was at this moment that Monad Proxy decided to crash the party. The Pulse of the Awakening was in effect, so even though she used to be his lover, she was nevertheless compelled to kill him, although I imagine that even if this was not the case, she'd still be pretty angry to catch her man macking on a younger CLONE of herself, no less. In any case, both Proxies flipped out of Re-L's appartment, and that was the last Re-L saw of them that night.

The next morning, Vincent Law was found unconscious a short distance away from her appartment, and Monad was nowhere in the area. But she wasn't done with him. She caught up with him in a shopping center, and chased him through a crowd, killing everyone who got in her way, including a woman and her newborn son. Out of the corner of his eye, Vincent spotted the woman's companion-type AutoReiv, Pino, falling to her knees and praying, the first thing AutoReivs do after they're infected with the Cogito virus.

Monad cornered Vincent in the lower districts of Romdeau and it was at this point that Ergo Proxy killed her. Vincent later woke up on the metro with blood on his hands, and, again, no memory of turning into Ergo and killing Monad. Now, both Re-L and Raul Creed, Romdeau's newly minted Security Chief, were investigating Proxies, Re-L because being attacked by the giant ex-girlfriend of an equally giant godly creeper kind of piqued her curiousity, and Raul because it was his job. There were all kinds of witnesses to the fact that a Proxy was chasing Vincent Law, so both Raul and Re-L set their sights on capturing, or at least interrogating Mr. Popular-with-Proxies himself. Vincent got a call from his Entourage, Dorothy, and when he returned to the AutoReiv Disposal offices, he found that she had been destroyed, and nearly got killed by Romdeau security forces.

In any case, Vincent packed a few essentials and managed to evade capture long enough to make his way to the service tunnels. There he ran into Pino, who was herself on the run from an AutoReiv Disposal squad. Pino led him down a path that, it appeared, only infected AutoReivs knew about, specifically, to an airlock that led outside the Dome. Now, all this time, Re-L had been trying to reach Vincent's cell phone, but he had been kind of busy dodging security guys. She eventually reached him, and he begged for her help. Re-L promised him she would do everything in her power to help him, and asked him where he was, and managed to figure out where he was. But she only managed to beat the Security Bureau by a few minutes. His despair was such that he deliberately let go and fell to the surface, along with Pino.

Vince and Pino stayed in the commune for a while during which Vincent recovered and tried to figure out what to do next, but fate wouldn't let him rest for long. An automated scout vehicle from Romdeau spied Pino while on its regular patrol and would have killed Pino if Vincent hadn't shot it down first. Before it crashed to the ground, it managed to broadcast its last few seconds of video footage to its masters at the Security Bureau. Thus the people of Romdeau learned of the fugitive immigrant's survival, and of the existence of the commune.

Shortly thereafter, Re-L arrived to take Vincent away. While she was argueing with Hoody about Vincent's return, an attack on the commune had already begun and Re-L's hazmat suit was damaged. The only way she could move was by discarding the suit, but once exposed to the outside air, she succumbed to illness and she did not have the advantage of a Proxy's immune system. She would have to be returned to Romdeau in order to survive. While Hoody used her ship to ferry her back to Romdeau, Vincent, Pino, and the surviving refugees escaped the commune on Hoody's airship, the 400 Rabbits.

Now Vincent throughout all this had mostly taken a WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME, I AM SO PERSECUTED attitude. But, despite appearances, he was not stupid, and what with the black-outs he'd been having whenever he turned into Ergo Proxy, and the strange dreams of stars shooting into the sky, he was clueing in to the fact that not all was quite right with him.

The soldiers picked them up and fed Vincent and offered to repair the 400 Rabbits, which had gotten damaged in the attack, but only if he offered his assistance with their war. Vincent realized how much more agreeable Pino was in comparison to these jerks who were drafting him into a pointless conflict and immediately regretted his AutoReiv-dismissing ways. He was all for grabbing Pino and getting the hell out of there as soon as his ship was repaired, but unfortunately Vince was a magnet for Proxies, and one of them stealthily killed a couple of soldiers. Their leaders, of course, blamed Vincent and locked him and Pino up in a cell next to one of those pertinent madwomen, the type that spout nothing but the most cryptic and foreshadowy nonsense. As she babbled, Vincent began to feel anxious and frightened; he was feeling the Pulse of the Awakening as the other Proxy drew nearer. After slaughtering most of the soldiers, the other Proxy finally made her move on Vincent, only by then he had turned into Ergo Proxy and promptly killed her, after which he fell unconscious.

Then some fruity-looking guy brought Vincent, Pino, and apparently the 400 Rabbits as well, to Asura Dome. Vincent was quite surprised to wake up in opulent surroundings and be wined and dined by a man who did not seem to be all there. The man's name was Kazkis, and he would turn out to be a Proxy. The Proxy Vincent had killed in the last episode was called Senex, and she and Kazkis were lovers. But Kazkis, initially, didn't seem particularly upset at his lover's death. He practically declared his love for Vincent... but when he realized that Vincent didn't remember killing Senex or even who he used to be, well, that's when Kazkis got pissed. Apparently it's one thing to kill Kazkis's girlfriend, and another thing entirely to not even remember it. In any case, he chased Vincent halfway across the dome, badgering him about being a Proxy and running away from his duty while the hapless wanderer denied the truth in vain. Eventually Vincent had to stop running and fight back and this was the first time he was aware when he once again involuntarily switched to Proxy form. The process looked painful and traumatic. But Ergo did kill Kazkis, and as he was dying, Kazkis asked Ergo one last time: "What are you the agent of?" And Ergo finally remembered his name: Ergo Proxy, the agent of Death.

Then there was another episode where Raul and Daedalus and Re-L furthered some more plot and Vincent didn't appear at all. Apparently, Vincent had to learn his lesson more than once, because the next episode took place entirely within his own mind. Basically Vincent stumbled across a bookstore in the middle of nowhere, where someone who looked just like Ergo Proxy/Proxy One went on about perspective and Descartes and the Pulse of the Awakening, took Vincent back through his own recent memories, the ones with relevance to his existence as a Proxy. Tried to make him remember. WHO WAS VINCENT LAW, WHAT WAS HE AFRAID OF? WHAT DROVE HIM TO ERASE HIS OWN MEMORY? Whereas the incident with Kazkis had confronted Vincent with physical evidence of his being a Proxy, this episode was dedicated to Vincent's actually coming to terms with the fact that he was a Proxy.

Instead she sat down beside him and started talking about how she had followed him all this way and how she felt 'strangely drawn' to him, so at least you can't blame him for getting the wrong idea. He pulled her down with him, which knocked the gun out of her hand. He was busy awkwardly confessing his love to her, and hadn't noticed it yet. And Re-L decided the best way to keep him distracted was to kiss him, thereby giving him an even more innaccurate impression of her feelings, while using her foot to kick the gun out of sight.

Re-L decided she was going to travel with Vincent and Pino, and ordered her Entourage, Iggy, to take the Proxy's body back to Romdeau with him. Little did she know that Iggy had been infected with the Cogito Virus ages ago and decided to kill Vincent and kidnap her instead, since he figured she'd be safer in Romdeau than with a monster. To this end he swiped Re-L's gun and succeeded in imprisoning her, but the dead Proxy's AutoReiv tried to kill her. In the end he sacrificed himself for his selfish mistress's sake. Oh yeah, and then Vincent gave Re-L back her gun to show her that he trusted her, and trusted her to kill him if it ever became necessary.

By now you've probably noticed a pattern in this story. They would make a stop, find a Proxy, kill a Proxy, maybe the Proxy messed with their minds a little, then they would move on. The next two episodes were pretty much like that. In the first, they made their way to another Dome to gather supplies, and encountered a shapeshifting prophecy that tried to kill them, turn them against eachother, pretend to be Vincent and convince him he was suicidal, not necessarily in that order. Luckily he caught on and they managed to escape.

In the next one, somehow, don't ask me how, it's not even shown, they got sucked into this gameshow run by a Proxy called MCQ.

Then they were becalmed for a few days and Vincent and Pino chillaxed while Re-L went stir-crazy, and when the wind picked up they arrived at a cave system populated by Morlocks who were allergic to fresh air. On their way out the spotted a missile flying in the direction of Mosque, and when they got there, Mosque was pretty much destroyed. Vincent found an old room with a broken AutoReiv that was supposed to be the guardian of his memory; but something had clearly been there not long before and trashed the place so that Vincent would not be able to lear anything there. That, though they didn't know it, was Proxy One, who took care to leave a clue that Vincent would find what he was looking for back in Romdeau. So after all that, they finally turned around and set a course back to Romdeau, pausing only to get messed around by Proxies some more.

Although he acknowledged that he was the one who killed her, he could not forgive Donov Meyer to the horrors Monad had been subjected to while in captivity.

And killed Donov Meyer right before Re-L's eyes. Meanwhile, Raul Creed was lying in wait in the shadows. While Re-L confronted Ergo, he shot the Proxy in the arm with an FP shell, but Ergo survived by ripping off his own arm, and then promptly growing it back. Proxies are hardcore like that.

He told him that was precisely the point. Ergo Proxy wanted to die. But Re-L, ever difficult, said screw that, you can't tell me what to do. I ain't killing you.

Anyway, Proxy One was only too happy to monologue about the purpose of the Proxies and the malice implanted by the creators. And also to accuse Ergo of running away, an irony which was not lost on either of them. He nearly took her up on her offer. Running away with Monad sounded like a pretty sweet deal. There was just one catch: it entailed flying through the clouds and into the sunlight. Suicide, for a Proxy.

Vincent recalled that Re-L had asked him to find her, when she left him and his original to their confrontation, and he wasn't ready to die just yet anymore. So he appologized to Monad, left her to fly into the sun on her own, and went back down to pay his respects to Proxy One, who with his dying breath, told him he could think of no fitter punishment for the Creators than Vincent's survival.

Point in Canon: So, basically, after Vincent had his final words with Proxy One, Romdeau Dome completely fell to pieces, and I mean that literally. Vince was perched on a tower waiting for Re-L and Pino to pick him up on the Rabbit. And that's when he'll be pulled into Siren's Port.

Character Personality: The thing to remember about Vincent Law is that, as I mentionned before, he hasn't existed as his own person for very long. Vincent Law was the human mask Ergo Proxy wore after he erased his memory. And before that, Ergo Proxy himself did not realize he was only the shadow of Proxy One. He was essentially the same as Proxy One up to and including his descent into despair. But somehow, Ergo's despair was worse. It wasn't enough for him just to quit his job, to leave Romdeau. He could no longer even bear the memories of a Proxy's duty, and of the cruel experiment that the creators set up. To abandon the burden, he had to erase his own memory. I don't know why his reaction was worse than his progenitor's, but that was the key to their eventual differentiation. As Kazkis said, when Ergo erased his memories, he lost himself. That was probably intentional on his part, as was the creation of the Vincent Law persona. Vincent Law couldn't be allowed to know that he was a Proxy, lest it shatter his tender psyche, lest the terrible memories come flowing back.

And Vincent scarcely represents the classic idea of a god. He's soft-spoken and easy-going, hardly the kind to rain down righteous wrath. That role would be more easily associated with his progenitor, Proxy One, who engineered the destruction of Romdeau in a fashion more brutal than entirely necessary, simply out of spite for the imperfect creatures he had created. But Proxy One is dead, and Ergo Proxy has taken up the role, though he does it for a different reason. Over the course of his travels, Vincent has experienced a lot. Met people, killed Proxies, experienced life. He has met people living outside the domes. He has seen a colony of Morlocks living in a poisonous cave. He's learned that life is tough, often dark and full of suffering. But it is also worth living. If Ergo Proxy once hated his creations, this is no longer the case. "The living have no choice but to go on living," as he once told Kazkis Proxy. Killing humans simply because they're flawed, destroying the dome simply because it was destined to be destroyed, these things don't sit well with him. It's not so much a question of love as of justice, for the Proxies as well as the humans, and he intends to see that the Creators answer for their actions. This is his new purpose.

At this point, the Vincent Law and Ergo Proxy personas are almost completely merged. He will still tend to be more violent and intimidating in his Proxy form, and less so in his human form, but let's face it, as Ergo Proxy he is much better suited to fighting and being scary than as derpy, average-looking Vincent Law. Kazkis Proxy had a habit of staying in human form unless he needed to fight, and I think, now that Vincent has control over his transformations, that he would adopt a similar modus operandi. If only because Proxies are giants, there's not much room on the 400 Rabbits, and Vincent bangs his head on the ship's ceiling often enough without adding about three feet to his height.

See, Vincent's a pretty easygoing sort of guy these days, but he'll always be a little awkward. The kind of guy who hurts himself while making repairs because he's daydreaming about Re-L. Or who doesn't pay attention to his surroundings and gets kicked out of the ship. He lets these things happen because in the long run they don't matter, and when it comes to the little things, he doesn't have much pride. Despite his identity as Ergo Proxy and the Agent of Death, Vincent is a pretty humble guy. In the beginning, he just wanted to be human. He wanted to be normal, he wanted to belong. That is why he was so focused on becoming a fellow citizen. That is why he was willing to, as he said, 'constantly suppress [him]self, all the time, everywhere.' He sought approval and he was confused as to why he always fell short. He patterned his behavior along the lines of what he thought an ideal citizen should be; obedient, unemotional, unwilling or unable to express doubt or question the status quo. And he tried, he tried so hard and still it wasn't enough. So he started to wonder if maybe there was something wrong with him, that he was constantly being rejected. And now that he has his memory back, he almost feels he doesn't have the right to claim the title of god, not when he abandoned Romdeau.

But for the things that matter, Vincent will stand firm. He showed bravery and quick thinking in saving Pino's life from the automated patrol. He stood up to Re-L when she tried to take him back to Romdeau at the expense of the people of the commune, who were about to be killed. He has a backbone and a strong sense of right and wrong, see. It only took being chased by the Security Bureau for him to understand that acting meek and keeping his head down would not guarantee him acceptance.

Which isn't to say he's a total dork, and he isn't as much of an idiot as he first appears. He is smart, honest! He notices things, works them out. Re-L accused him of not being very well organized and of making up the trip to Mosque as he went along, but he did have maps, and even a Proxy couldn't guarantee a brisk wind every day on such a long journey. He's the guy who figured out that all the infected AutoReivs employed similar escape routes. One gets the impression, from his rant on the railing, that it was hard for him not to doubt the system, not to ask worrying questions. He's a thoughtful and conscientious young man.

That said, Vincent listens to his heart a lot more than he listens to his head. Although it's true he had no way of knowing that the initial reason he was drawn to Re-L was because she was made to look like Monad, to be bait to draw him back to Romdeau, he probably knows now. And he doesn't care. It doesn't matter to him why he loves Re-L, he just does. He might have begun life as Proxy One's shadow, but he no longer cares who he used to be. He is himself, and that's enough for him. It's why it took him so long to accept that he was a Proxy. Because he really, really, really didn't want to be a 'monster'. He just wanted to be loved, at the risk of sounding trite. That's why he was so terrified of the idea that he wasn't human. He would deny it vehemently each time it was hinted at, and when confronted with actual evidence he would try his best to repress it. His encounter with Kazkis Proxy was fairly traumatic for him. There's one thing I forgot to mention about it, though. After it happened, Pino told Vincent she knew all along that there were 'two of him'. And that she wasn't afraid, because Vincent was the one who always protected her.

That was crucial for him. After this and Anamnesis, the episode where Proxy One went into his mind and forced him to accept that he was in fact a Proxy, Vincent seemed calmer and more at peace with himself. The other shoe had dropped, and Pino was still with him. Pino had known all along and still she was his friend. He's not very socially adept, but his few friends mean the world to him, and their support make all the difference.

Character Plans: It practically goes without saying that Vincent will make a beeline for Re-L Meyer. More generally, though, Vincent will probably just try to make ends meet, and keep those he cares about close to him.

He'll also be intrigued by the fact that he's been spirited to an Earth that hasn't yet been irreparably damaged and screwed over by the Creators. It may eventually occur to him that this could be an opportunity to set right what once went wrong. He'll try to avoid joining either SERO or AGI, since he's not into that sort of war. Or really any sort of senseless conflict. If he can find an unaffiliated garage, I figured he could be a mechanic. Of course that will just mean he'll take heat from both sides, and apparently harmless Vincent may also be a prime target for anti-newcomer sentiment.

Writing Samples

First Person Sample: [Voice] Back where I come from, everyone was made for a reason, given a single purpose in life. It's something that brings them stability and gets them through their day-to-day lives. When they lose their purpose, they become desperate, and fall apart if they're unable to regain it. So did I, when I lost mine, but I discovered a new reason for being. I wonder if the reason we needed a raison d'être was because we were flawed creatures and too fragile to live without one. Is it even possible to live without one entirely?

We Newcomers are torn from our own lives and our own duties and transplanted into this city. While we're here our lives are on hold and our purposes go unfulfilled. No time might be passing back home, but time still passes for us. Anyway, I guess I'm wondering how other people are coping with that.

Third Person Sample: Shortly before sunrise, the Core pulled in a new victim. The ordinary-looking man in the red cloak hit the ground with a thud and a groan. For one stunned second he lay there face-down in the dirt, then slowly pushed himself up to a sitting position, holding his face in his hands like a man waking up with a bad hangover.

Ow. Dammit. What happened? The last thing Vincent remembered was perching against that column in the ruins of Romdeau. He had just spotted the Rabbit in the distance, and was waving it over. Had he- Yes, he had lost his balance and fallen. So, he fell and the landing must have knocked him unconscious. What would Re-L say when she caught up to him? And Pino would no doubt laugh at him. He'd never live it down.

"Why's it so dark?" he mumbled. "H-how long was I out?" This place didn't look like the ruins of Romdeau at a-- he moved, in a flash, out of reach of a Mutation that had snuck up behind the disoriented newbie, completely undetected, or apparently so, until a split-second before those long digits closed around his neck.

"What the hell are you?!" Vincent growled, a deep inhuman harmonic creeping into his voice as his body began to change, to take on Ergo Proxy's form. The monster made no response but lunged at the Proxy, claws bared, scoring a deep gash on his arm that made him cry out in pain. Vincent lashed out in retaliation, but it appeared that both he and the monster were equally matched in speed, and neither was able to land another hit on the other.

Dawn broke within minutes, and the thing seemed to melt in contact with the light before Vincent's disbelieving eyes. He watched the Darkness recede, still tensed for a fight and momentarily forgetting his own weakness to sunlight. He was more concerned with his injury. The deep gash in his arm should have healed by then. Could that thing possibly have been a Proxy? No, there was no way; he hadn't sensed anything like that from the beast. As the fog set in and the sirens blared, and nothing further attacked him, he returned to human form and stood numbly in the baseball diamond, looking at the surroundings, and they were no more believable than his sudden attack. Green grass in the outfield. A tree on the other side of the fence, looking healthy and lush. The sky was blue, with white, fluffy clouds. Where were the ruins of the Dome he had once called his home? This place was too green and devoid of rubble and trash.

It seemed like he had been cast into a nightmare that had abruptly transformed into a daydream. From darkness to dawn. From death to rebirth. It was almost trite. Such musings were impractical at the moment. Vincent just wanted to know what the hell was going on. And look! There was someone coming out of the dugout. Someone who would hopefully have some answers, since they now had a bewildered and somewhat freaked out Proxy headed their way.
